Changes in Industrial Competitiveness as a Factor of Integration: Identifying Challenges of the Enlarged Single European Market

Research project co-ordinated by CASE - Center for Social and Economic Research, funded by the 5th Framework Programme of the European Union

The principal aim of the project is to evaluate the progress of firms in the countries which are candidates for accession to the European Union in developing their ability to compete in the world economy, illustrate the differences existing among them in this respect, and identify the related challenges facing these countries and the Single Market and policy makers. We will identify the actors responsible for changes in competitiveness and the factors underlying their role in this process, analyse the pattern of specialisation and the new European division of labour emerging from changes in competitiveness, and show how these changes affect the labour market and economic growth. Policy analysis and recommendations will be an important element of the project.
